TECHNICAL GRID ACCOUNTING & DEFINITIONS

Electricity Grid Telemetry & Accounting Methodology

All generation, capacity, demand, and emissions figures on GlobalEnergyData.org follow standardized international electricity accounting rules from Ember and the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

Metric & Unit Accounting Definition
1. Electricity Generation (TWh) Gross vs. Net Generation & Fuel Grouping Electricity generation is reported in terawatt-hours (1 TWh = 1,000 GWh = 10^9 kWh). Generation is disaggregated into nine standardized fuel categories: Coal, Natural Gas, Oil & Other Fossil, Nuclear, Hydroelectric, Wind, Solar, Bioenergy, and Other Renewables (Geothermal, Tidal). Pumped-storage hydro generation is excluded to prevent double-counting electricity already generated by primary sources.
2. Low-Carbon & Renewable Shares (%) Aggregate Clean Electricity Definitions

Low-Carbon (Clean) Share (%) equals the sum of Nuclear + Hydroelectric + Wind + Solar + Bioenergy + Other Renewables divided by Total Generation. Fossil Fuel Share (%) equals the sum of Coal + Natural Gas + Oil & Other Fossil divided by Total Generation.

Low-Carbon Share (%) = (Nuclear TWh + Renewables TWh) / Total TWh * 100
3. Power-Sector Carbon Intensity (gCO2/kWh) Lifecycle & Direct Generation Emissions Grid carbon intensity (gCO2/kWh) measures total power-sector CO2-equivalent emissions divided by total electricity generated, using IPCC-aligned fuel emission factors across coal, gas, oil, and biomass generation.
4. Per-Capita Electricity Load (kWh) Annual Demand Per Person Per-capita electricity load converts national electricity demand (generation plus net imports) from megawatt-hours per person into kilowatt-hours per person (1 MWh = 1,000 kWh) using UN World Population Prospects population denominators.
